  • This was built without plans from a simple concept I had in my head. The following is just a general description. If you build something similar there will be details that you’ll need to work out. For instance, the shelf brackets I used are not square. So I used wood shims to make the base of my storage box level. But this description gives you the general idea. It isn’t complicated.

The goal was to make a moderately large, and moderately deep general purpose workbench that would be sturdy, would fold out of the way when not in use so as to not intrude much into the garage, and it should provide a fair amount of storage for commonly used tools. It needed to be quick and easy to deploy, sturdy, and not cost very much.

My solution was to take a 4×8 sheet of 7/8″ birch veneer plywood and split it in half lengthwise. (I used veneer plywood for a smoother finish even though the bench is expected to get beaten up. It was only $10 more expensive that standard constructon plywood.) I then split one of those halves lengthwise. The two smaller approximately 1 foot wide planks were used to form the top and bottom of the storage box. The wider two foot plank became the front of the box that opens as a “drop lid” to become the main part of the bench. When folded out, the lid combines with the bottom of the box to provide about 3 feet of bench depth if needed. Available scrap plywood was used to make the sides of the box.

The bottom of the storage box is supported by four heavy duty metal shelf brackets that are screwed into the garage wall studs. A 1x2x8 hardwood strip was screwed to the wall studs to support the back edge of the top of the box. More 1×2 strips were used to frame the pegboard and solid panel that are used to provide tool brackets inside the storage box.

When folded out, the bench surface/drop lid is supported by two 2×4 braces on the outside ends and two 1×4 braces in the middle. Using thinner 1×4 braces in the middle allows room for the braces to fold in on top of each other during storage without interference. I purchased a 12 pack of door hinges, using two for each bench brace and four for the drop lid. The lid braces mount to 1×4 strips that are screwed into wall studs. Two 1×2 strips of hardwood were screwed to the leading and bottom edge of the drop lid bench to provide extra rigidity and an area that can take abuse by such things as clamps. My bench vise is now mounted to two small sheets of plywood that were glued together. That assembly is clamped to the bench when a bench vise is needed. A simple slide latch holds the lid/bench in place when folded up.

They aren’t really related to a work bench other than I guess I had drop lids on the brain. I used scrap wood to make three little shelves for drinks and stuff for when we have friends over for table tennis get-togethers.

This company has the idea of "better quality, lower processing costs, prices are more reasonable", so they have competitive product quality and price, that's the main reason we chose to cooperate.
