North Koreans welcomed their first gold medal at the London Games with a delayed broadcast shown on state television on Monday.
Pyongyang citizens watched scenes of North Korean athlete An Kum Ae winning gold in Judo on a big screen outside the capital’s main railway station.
“Today, the news that our athlete An Kum Ae won the gold medal really touched our workers. We hope that our Korean players including An Kum Ae will fly the DPRK flag more vigorously,” said resident Ko Jong Min.
The large screen showing state television in a public place is a new development in Pyongyang.
North Korean broadcaster KRT showed the London Olympics for the first time on Sunday 29 July, with coverage including scenes from the opening ceremony two days earlier.
The Asian Broadcasting Union brokered rights for KRT to receive the official 2012 Olympic feed.
North Korea rarely shows live television. The only live event from abroad shown on state television in recent years was a World Cup football match in 2010, where Portugal defeated North Korea 7-0 in South Africa.
North Korea won a second Olympic gold Sunday in weightlifting, one of its traditional strengths in international competition.
